5 Reasons you need a Preconception Plan

HINT - it’s more complex than getting those two lines! Preconception care is important for a healthy baby, pregnancy, and beyond.

Here are my TOP FIVE reasons why:

  1. IMPROVE EGG + SPERM QUALITY -

We are talking about DNA here, and passing on your genetic material. Did you know that both sperm health and egg quality can be affected by environmental toxins, stress and inflammation? Nutrition and lifestyle modifications help to improve both.

  2. OPTIMISE MICROBIOME HEALTH -

Think taking a probiotic is enough? If only it were that easy. Probiotics do not ‘reinoculate’ our gut as most believe they do. The effects of probiotic bacteria is transient, our gut requires prebiotic fibres through your diet to enhance the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, including the well-known Lactobacillus species. A healthy and diverse gut microbiome is associated with improved health and fertility outcomes.

  3. REGULATE HORMONES TO SUPPORT PREGNANCY

And no, I’m not referring to taking a generic “hormone balancing” supplement (Don’t get me started!). We all know about hCG, which is what gives us a positive pregnancy test. But theres more. The hormone progesterone maintains a pregnancy and plays a role in implantation. If you have high oestrogen/oestrogen excess, sometimes referred to as “oestrogen dominance”, you may have insufficient progesterone. Testing your reproductive hormone profile can help identify this.

  4. CORRECT NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES -

A key benefit of planning for pregnancy 3-4 months before conception, is the TIME to correct existing nutrient deficiencies. FACT - Pregnancy is a time of increased nutrient demand! And once you get pregnant, it’s then harder to ‘top-up’ your supplies, especially if you’re experiencing morning sickness! (see the next point). Taking a prenatal vitamin is a great start, but isn’t the end of your preconception care plan. We can identify your individual nutrient deficiencies with blood testing and matching these to your signs and symptoms.

  5. PROMOTE A HEALTHY PREGNANCY -

Once you are pregnant, your journey is just beginning! Nourishing mum and bub is essential for the best outcomes for both of you. The nausea of early pregnancy, plus the reduced room for large meals in later pregnancy can prevent us from eating the wide variety of foods that we need for pregnancy health. Preparing for conception gives us a chance to address exisiting health issues, and potentially reduce the risks of negative outcomes in pregnancy.
